Systemic supervision of a woman during pregnancy is known as antenatal care. And knowing the expected date of delivery helps in it. Here I will tell you an easy method to count the expected date of delivery (EDD). The supervision should be of a regular and periodic nature in accordance with the principles laid down or more frequently according to the need of the individual. The care should start from the beginning of pregnancy.
How to count Expected date of delivery

Things to do by the doctor during antenatal care:-
  • History taking and examination of the pregnant women by the doctors it may include general and obstetrical history.
  • The advice is given to the pregnant women by the doctor. It may comprise of diet, medicine etc.

Importance of antenatal care:-


-To screen in the higher risk cases.

-Maintaining the physiology of pregnancy.

-To prevent and to detect at the earliest and to create any complications that may arise.

-To ensure continuing medical surveillance And profilexus. Improve the psychology of the mother.

-To remove the fear of the unknown and to educate the mother about the physiology of pregnancy and Labour through demonstrations charts and diagrams. the idea is to gain confidence which will be an asset during the time of labor.

The objective is to ensure a normal pregnancy with delivery of a healthy baby from a healthy mother


When to call a delivery normal:-

Birth of a single baby in good condition between 38 to 42 week by date with a fetal weight of 2.5 kg or more and with no maternal complication. As such, a normal pregnancy is a retrospective term.

Calculation of the expected date of delivery (EDD):-                                                          

This is done according to Naegele"s formula (1812) by adding 9 calendar month and 7 days with the first day of the last period. Alternatively, one can count back 3 calendar month from the first day of the last period and then add 7 days to get the expected date of the delivery formal method is commonly employed

Example: - The patient had her first day of last menstrual period on 1st January. By adding 9 calendar months it comes to 1st October then Add 7 days i.e. 8 October which becomes the expected date of delivery.

When to visit the doctor during pregnancy:-


The pregnant woman should go for the investigation to avoid any unnecessary complication. It is advice to the patient that should be visited by the doctor at:


- The interval of 4 weeks from the first visit up to 28 weeks.

- Beyond 28 weeks the checkup should be done at the interval of 2 weeks up to 36 weeks.

- Thereafter weekly, till the expected date of birth of a baby.

    Summary:-

    The prophylactic value of antenatal supervision is so much tested and recognized that it is needless to stress its importance. By counting the Expected date of delivery helps in antenatal care. It should be borne in mind that a successful obstetric outcome depends on chains of careful supervision which start in pregnancy and end in a puerperal period. The inadequacy of one cannot be compensated by the other.
